Instrutor Paciencia

Brian Craven

As a teenager and young adult, I spent several years training in Tae Kwon Do. I enjoyed the physicality of martial arts and the mental challenge of sparring, yet I never developed a passion for it. The rigid forms and militaristic focus were too serious and one dimensional for me, particularly as I got older. It just wasn't any fun. Leaving Tae Kwon Do in 1996, I focused on my other long standing sport, volleyball, until a shoulder injury in 2001 forced me to look for another activity.

In 2004, I decided to observe a workshop with brazilian Mestre Beiçola, who was visiting a Honolulu capoeira school from his home in Palo Alto. I was overwhelmed with what I saw and, at the age of 33, started training in capoeira the very next week. The more I learned and grew as a capoeirista, the more it became a part of me...and a true passion. As a student of Mestre Kinha and Capoeira Besouro, my passion is fueled not only by a love of capoeira, but also by the incredible energy that pervades our school.

In 2011 I received my instructor cord, and I believe that teaching others is an invaluable experience that strengthens the teacher's skills, as well as the students'.
